Mimesis
Through photographic manipulation and the visual layering of double exposures, this work seeks to open a dialogue around contemporary human reality in Ecuador.
Inspired by Edward Said’s reflections in Mimesis: The Representation of Reality in Western Literature, Loaiza revisits the notion of mimesis—not merely as imitation, but as a critical and interpretive act. The work positions photography as a space where representation becomes inquiry: a way of reading the world through its visible and invisible structures by confounding the spectator. There is no single meaning or representation, but rather the merging of images that leave the viewer to assemble meaning or to simply feel through the affect created by the dialoguing bodies and symbolism.
This exhibition unfolds as both a theoretical and practical exploration of artistic and cultural creation, grounded in the analysis of our social frameworks. It reclaims and expands the interpretation of signs and symbols, observing gendered reality as a dialectical condition—one that questions how we see, and how we are seen.
